Pruning, Inspect, Nail and Extend – The PINE Method of Tree Maintenance

Tree Maintenance

Trees add beauty and value to our landscape, but they need care and attention to thrive. The PINE method – prune, inspect, nourish and extend – is the best way to prevent problems from developing and keep trees healthy.

Pruning:

Keeping your trees healthy through pruning promotes proper growth, stimulates new growth and helps to eliminate weak spots. Routine pruning also reduces the risk of damage from storms, insects and disease. Newly planted trees need to be pruned less than older trees to ensure they develop strong roots and become established.

PW will trim any street or park tree that is dead or in poor condition, a safety hazard to persons or property, or has branches growing too close to sewer lines, power lines, water or gas pipes, or interferes with sightlines for traffic control devices and signs. This maintenance is based on ANSI A300 standard practices and will be performed on a regular schedule.

Invasive weeds:

Preventing the spread of invasive plants is an important part of tree maintenance. These fast-growing species can compete for water and nutrients with the soil around the base of the tree, causing root damage and inhibiting tree health. Often, removing these plants can be as simple as digging up the roots and tamping down the area around the base of the trunk.

Mulching:

Adding a layer of mulch is an easy way to support the health of your trees, while improving the appearance of your yard and property. Generally, a 2-3 inch layer of organic material like wood bark, wood chips, pine needles or compost mixes is recommended. In sandy or fast-draining soils, a deeper layer of 4 inches may be necessary to improve soil structure and fertility.

Watering:

It’s a good idea to check on the moisture level of your soil regularly and provide extra water during dry periods. A deep soaking once a month can help the soil to retain moisture and encourage deep root growth. When determining the right amount of water to apply, consult your local tree care expert for specific advice.
